The Outdoors in Athens, Texas

Cedar Creek Reservoir, a large lake just northwest of Athens, is the area's outdoor centerpiece. One of the most popular recreation and retirement lakes in this part of Texas, it draws boaters, anglers, and weekenders from the Dallas area to its big water and the lively lake towns of Gun Barrel City, Mabank, and Seven Points. It's excellent for bass, crappie, and catfish fishing, as well as boating, water sports, and lakeside living, with marinas, parks, and waterfront restaurants around its long shoreline.

For anyone who wants a true lake lifestyle within reach of both Athens and Dallas, Cedar Creek is the headliner.

On the city's east side, Lake Athens is a 1,799-acre reservoir that offers quieter fishing and boating closer to town — and it's home to the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. The center, run by Texas Parks and Wildlife, is both a top family attraction and the heart of Texas's trophy-bass program (ShareLunker), making Athens a genuine hub of freshwater fishing in the state.

Lake Athens itself is a pretty, less-crowded alternative to Cedar Creek, good for a relaxed day of fishing or paddling. Between the two lakes, Athens-area anglers have a remarkable amount of quality water at their doorstep.

Beyond the lakes, the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society northwest of downtown spreads across roughly 100 acres of gardens, woodlands, and nature trails, with a historic 1850s home and a long suspension bridge over a creek. It's a peaceful spot for a walk and a showcase of native East Texas plants — a different kind of outdoor experience from the lakes.
