Things to Do in Athens, Texas

The standout attraction is the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center, operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife on Lake Athens east of town. It's part working fish hatchery, part aquarium, and part interactive nature center — and it's genuinely excellent. Visitors can walk through tanks teeming with native Texas fish, watch a dive show in a giant aquarium, see alligators and turtles, and try their hand at the casting pond. It's also the home of the ShareLunker program that has made Texas a national leader in trophy bass.

Family-friendly, educational, and affordable, the Fisheries Center is one of the best attractions of its kind in East Texas and the reason many people first come to Athens.

Athens's traditions are worth timing a visit around. The Old Fiddlers Reunion, held downtown each spring since 1932, is one of the oldest fiddlers' contests in the country — a free, all-day celebration of old-time fiddle music on the square that draws performers and fans from across the region. It's a wonderful slice of living East Texas culture.

The town also leans into its claim as the Original Home of the Hamburger, honoring Fletcher 'Old Dave' Davis with an annual hamburger cook-off. Eating a great burger in the town that says it invented one is a fitting thing to do in Athens — and the local burger joints take the heritage seriously.

For a quieter outing, the East Texas Arboretum and Botanical Society northwest of downtown spreads across roughly 100 acres of gardens, woodlands, and nature trails, with a historic 1850s home (the Wofford House) and a long suspension bridge over a creek. It's a peaceful place for a walk and a showcase of native East Texas plants.

Downtown Athens, centered on the historic Henderson County courthouse square, has antique shops, local stores, and restaurants in a classic small-town setting. The square comes alive during the fiddlers reunion and other seasonal events, and it's a pleasant place to stroll and grab a bite.

Athens is lake country. Cedar Creek Reservoir, a large lake to the northwest shared with the towns of Gun Barrel City, Mabank, and Seven Points, is one of the most popular recreation and retirement lakes in this part of Texas — big water for boating, fishing, and lakeside living, drawing crowds from the Dallas area. Lake Athens, a 1,799-acre reservoir on the city's east side (home to the Fisheries Center), offers quieter fishing and boating closer to town.

Between the two lakes, Athens is a genuine destination for anglers and boaters. The bass fishing is excellent — fitting for the home of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center — and the lake communities give the whole area a relaxed, water-oriented feel.
