Things to Do in Atlanta, Texas

Atlanta is a forest-country town in the far northeast corner of Texas, and its best things to do reflect that: a beloved state park on a big lake, excellent fishing and camping, and a historic small-town downtown — all in the deep Piney Woods of Cass County, a short drive from Texarkana.

Here's what to do in and around Atlanta.

Atlanta State Park

The area's outdoor centerpiece is Atlanta State Park, set deep in the Piney Woods on Wright Patman Lake about 11 miles northwest of town. It's a scenic, rustic park made for getting on the water and into the woods: two boat ramps, fishing piers, a designated swim area, canoe rentals, and 4.8 miles of hiking trails, including a short nature trail. The park's 58 campsites — all with water and electricity — make it a favorite weekend getaway, and day use costs just a few dollars.

For camping, fishing, swimming, or a day by the lake, Atlanta State Park is the main attraction, and it fills up fast on nice weekends — reservations are a good idea.

Wright Patman Lake

Beyond the state park, Wright Patman Lake itself is a major draw — a large reservoir on the Sulphur River known for excellent fishing, especially its renowned catfish, along with bass and crappie. Anglers, boaters, and water-skiers spread out across its broad waters, and parks and access points ring the shoreline.

Whether you launch from the state park or one of the lake's other access areas, Wright Patman offers the kind of big-water recreation that defines outdoor life in this corner of Texas.

Downtown and the Region

In town, Atlanta's historic downtown district offers the shops, cafes, and small-town charm of an old railroad-and-timber community — a pleasant place to stroll and get a feel for forest-country Texas. As the commercial center of Cass County, Atlanta is also the area's hub for shopping and services.

Atlanta's location opens up the wider region, too. Texarkana, with its theaters, museums, and bigger-city attractions, is about a half-hour northeast, and the lakes, forests, and backroads of far northeast Texas — near the Arkansas and Louisiana lines — spread out in every direction. It's a fine base for exploring this scenic, often-overlooked corner of the state.
