Things to Do in Cedar Hill, Texas

Cedar Hill State Park is the town's headline attraction — more than 1,800 acres on Joe Pool Lake, with camping, swimming, fishing, and boating alongside miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails through wooded hills. It's one of the best state parks close to Dallas.

Inside the park, the restored Penn Farm shows farm life from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s, a nice piece of history to pair with a day on the water or the trails. For a lake day or a trail ride within reach of the city, it's the first stop.

The Dogwood Canyon Audubon Center protects more than 200 acres of forest and a limestone canyon, with trails and a visitor center. Sitting on the Central Flyway migration route, it's one of the region's best birding spots.

Beyond birding, it runs classes, workshops, and hands-on programs, making it a genuine nature destination and a favorite with families and school groups.

For shopping and dining, Hillside Village (formerly Uptown Village) is the town's walkable outdoor shopping center, with Dillard's, Barnes & Noble and about a dozen places to eat. It's the easy option when you want a night out rather than a day on the trails.

And the trails are everywhere: Cedar Hill has about 3,000 acres of protected open space, so preserves and parks with miles of hill-country trails are never far. It's a town built around keeping the outdoors close.
