The History of Coppell, Texas
Coppell has been renamed after two different men it barely knew — first a lieutenant governor, then a New York banker who helped bail out its railroad. It spent a century as a small German-and-French farming settlement in a corner of Dallas County, then the airport rose next door and turned it into one of the metro's most desirable school districts. The name that stuck belongs to a financier who probably never set foot there.
Gibbs Station (1840s–1892)
German and French immigrants and Peters Colony settlers moved into this corner of Dallas County in the 1840s. The community that formed was first called Gibbs Station, after Barnett Gibbs, a Texas lieutenant governor who owned a lot of land in the area. It got a post office in 1887 and a railroad the next year when the St. Louis, Arkansas and Texas line built through. Then, in 1892, the depot was renamed Coppell — for George A. Coppell, a New York banker and financier who had helped reorganize the very railroad that ran through the town. The community took the depot's new name.
A Small Farm Town (1892–1960)
For its first several decades under the Coppell name, this was a modest agricultural community. By 1914 it had a couple of churches, general stores, a bank, a blacksmith, telephone service, and around 450 people — a typical small farm town serving the surrounding fields. It grew slowly and quietly on the far northwest edge of Dallas County, well outside the city's reach, with cotton and livestock as the mainstays.
The Airport Suburb (1970s–Today)
Everything changed when DFW International Airport opened in 1974 right next to Coppell. The little farm town suddenly sat beside the region's biggest transportation hub, and it developed in two directions at once: a dense base of corporate distribution and logistics operations that thrive on airport access, and family neighborhoods feeding into a school district that consistently ranks among the best in Texas. Coppell became the kind of suburb people move to specifically for the schools — a long way from Gibbs Station.
