Corsicana Guide

Things to Do in Corsicana, Texas

Corsicana is a fun, quirky stop on the Interstate 45 corridor between Dallas and the Piney Woods, with a claim to fame in just about every direction: the birthplace of Texas oil, the home of a world-famous fruitcake, the hometown of a country music legend, and — thanks to Netflix — the cheerleading capital of America. Add a revitalized historic downtown and a couple of good lakes nearby, and there's plenty to fill a day.

Here's what's worth your time in Corsicana.

Collin Street Bakery and Downtown

You can't visit Corsicana without stopping at Collin Street Bakery, baking its world-famous DeLuxe Fruitcake since 1896 and shipping it around the globe. Even if fruitcake isn't your thing, the bakery is a destination for cookies, pies, cinnamon rolls, pastries, and a genuine slice of Texas food history.

The historic downtown around the courthouse has been steadily revitalized and is worth a stroll. A highlight is Across the Street, home to one of the oldest soda fountains in Texas, where you can get a handmade milkshake at a vintage counter. Downtown's restored storefronts, the Corsicana Opry, shops, and restaurants make it an easy and pleasant place to wander.

Oil Heritage and History

Corsicana wears its history as the birthplace of the Texas oil industry. Pioneer Village preserves a collection of 19th-century log structures and pioneer-era buildings that tell the story of early Navarro County settlement. The city's oil legacy — the 1894 discovery and the boom that followed — is commemorated around town and celebrated each year at the Derrick Days festival.

For music history, Corsicana honors its native son Lefty Frizzell, the Country Music Hall of Fame legend, and the town's musical heritage runs deep. The historic homes and downtown architecture reflect the prosperity that oil and agriculture brought to the city around the turn of the 20th century.

Navarro College and 'Cheer'

Since the 2020 Netflix docuseries Cheer, Navarro College has put Corsicana on the map in an entirely new way. The college's powerhouse cheerleading program, coached by Monica Aldama, has won more than a dozen national championships, and fans of the show come to town hoping to catch the team in action or simply see where it all happens.

Navarro College is also home to cultural attractions, including the Cook Education Center with its planetarium, a Civil War museum, and a Western art collection. Between the college's events, athletics, and cultural offerings, the campus adds energy and things to do in Corsicana.

Lakes and the Outdoors

For outdoor time, Corsicana has water close at hand. Lake Halbert is a small city lake right in town, good for a quick fishing trip or a walk. A short drive away, Richland-Chambers Reservoir — one of the largest lakes by surface area in all of Texas — offers excellent fishing, boating, and lakeside recreation. Navarro Mills Lake, to the southwest, is another nearby reservoir popular with anglers and campers.

With Dallas only about 50 miles north on Interstate 45, Corsicana also works well as a base or a stop on a road trip, putting big-city attractions within easy reach while keeping small-town charm and big Texas lakes at the doorstep.
