The History of Crockett, Texas

Crockett's history reaches back to the very birth of the Republic of Texas. The town was named for the famed frontiersman and Tennessee congressman Davy Crockett, who, according to tradition, camped at a spring near the present-day town site in early 1836 as he made his way to join the doomed defenders of the Alamo. That spring — Davy Crockett Spring — is still marked downtown.

In 1836, Andrew Edwards Gossett, a Texas Revolution soldier from Tennessee, and his family donated the land for the town and chose to honor Crockett with the name. The town was incorporated in 1837 and received a post office in 1838, becoming the seat of Houston County — itself named for Sam Houston and recognized as the oldest county in Texas. Crockett ranks as the fifth-oldest city in the state.

Crockett's antiquity owes much to its location on El Camino Real de los Tejas — the Old San Antonio Road, the historic route that connected Mexico to the Texas frontier and on to Louisiana. This ancient road brought Spanish missionaries, soldiers, and settlers through the area for centuries. Nearby, the first Spanish mission in East Texas, Mission San Francisco de los Tejas, was founded in 1690 in what is now Houston County — preserved today at Mission Tejas State Park.

The early town was a frontier outpost, fortified during Native American raids in 1839 as Anglo settlement pushed into the region. Crockett grew slowly as a county-seat trading center in the deep forest, its fortunes tied to the timber and farmland around it.

Like much of East Texas, Crockett was transformed by the railroad and the timber industry. When the railroad arrived in 1872, it opened the surrounding forests to large-scale lumber exploitation, and the town grew as a timber and trading center, reaching about 1,200 residents by 1885. A brief lignite-coal mining boom from 1904 to 1910 added to the economy, and by the mid-1920s Crockett's population had passed 3,000.

The town earned a small place in American infrastructure history in 1956, when Loop 304 was built around Crockett — one of the first loop roads in the nation, a forerunner of the bypass highways that would later ring cities across the country. Retail and commerce gradually shifted to the loop, as they would in towns everywhere.

Today Crockett is a city of about 6,300, the historic seat of Houston County, set deep in the Piney Woods between Lufkin and Palestine. Its economy rests on timber and forest products, poultry, healthcare, natural gas, and agriculture, with retail along Loop 304 serving a wide rural area. It's a diverse community, with a large Black population alongside white and Hispanic residents.

Crockett's identity is tied to its history and its setting. The Davy Crockett National Forest spreads across the surrounding country, the El Camino Real and Mission Tejas tell the story of Spanish Texas, and downtown's Camp Street Cafe has become a renowned listening room for acoustic music. The town has produced notable athletes including NFL running back Joe Washington and NBA player Cartier Martin. For all its small size, Crockett remains one of the most historic towns in Texas — a frontier county seat that has endured nearly two centuries.
