East Mountain sits in classic East Texas country — rolling pine and hardwood forest, timber tracts, and pasture, all named for the small rise the town grew up around. The quiet roads off Farm Road 1845 make for scenic drives and bike rides, and the surrounding woods are good hunting country, with deer, hogs, and other game on private leases throughout the area.

For residents, much of the appeal is simply having room to breathe — wooded lots, a country feel, and the green surroundings of the Piney Woods, all within minutes of town conveniences.

East Mountain has no lake of its own, but several good ones lie close by. Lake Gladewater, just southwest near Gladewater, offers fishing, a city park, and camping, while Lake O' the Pines — a large reservoir north of Gilmer — provides big-water fishing, boating, and camping a short drive away. The lakes around Longview add still more options to the southeast.

Between these nearby lakes, anglers and boaters have real choices within a few minutes' to a half-hour's drive — a small-lake afternoon close to home or a big-reservoir weekend on Lake O' the Pines.

The Sabine River corridor, additional reservoirs, and the parks and trails of the Longview area all lie within a reasonable drive.
