The History of Euless, Texas
Euless is one of the three towns in 'HEB' — Hurst, Euless, Bedford — the run of mid-cities packed between Fort Worth and DFW Airport. It started with one Tennessee settler's cotton gin and, a century later, picked up something no one could have predicted: one of the largest Tongan communities anywhere outside the islands, whose kids made a New Zealand war dance part of Texas high school football.
One Settler's Town (1867–1950)
The town is named for Elisha Adam Euless, a Tennessean who came to Texas in 1867 and bought 170 acres near what's now the middle of the city. He set up a cotton gin and a community gathering spot, became a leading figure among the local farmers, and served two terms as county sheriff in the 1890s. The community that grew around his gin took his name. For most of its first century Euless was a small farming settlement between the two big cities, quiet and agricultural.
The Airport and the Boom (1950s–1970s)
What transformed Euless was its address. When Bell Helicopter set up nearby and, above all, when DFW International Airport opened in 1974 right on the mid-cities' doorstep, Euless became a convenient place to live for the region's growing aviation and airline workforce. The farm fields filled in with subdivisions and apartments, and the town grew into a solidly middle-class suburb defined by its central location between Fort Worth, Dallas, and the airport.
The Tongan Community (1970s–Today)
Euless's most distinctive story is its people. Beginning with a few families — an American Airlines employee and his wife, and some brothers studying at UT Arlington, depending on who you ask — a Tongan community took root and grew into one of the largest concentrations of Tongans outside Tonga itself, several thousand strong. Its most visible expression is at Trinity High School, where players of Tongan descent brought the Māori haka war dance to the football program as a pre-game ritual, earning national attention. It's a genuinely unusual cultural fingerprint for a North Texas suburb, and Euless wears it with pride.
