Before you hire a contractor in Frankston

  • Look up the license yourself. Search the license number shown above for plumbers in the TSBPE license search (by name, number, city or county), for HVAC and electrical contractors in TDLR's license search, for tow companies in TDLR's towing license search, and for pest control companies in TDA's weekly current-license reports.
  • Ask to see the plumber's card. The Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners requires licensed and registered plumbers to carry their license cards with them on the job site.
  • A/C and heating work needs a state license. Under TDLR rules, anyone who installs, repairs or maintains air conditioning, refrigeration or heating systems must be licensed, and every A/C company must employ a licensed contractor at each permanent office.
  • So does electrical work. Anyone who performs or offers to perform non-exempt electrical work in Texas must be licensed by TDLR and do that work through a licensed electrical contractor.
  • Watch for high-pressure sales. State rules bar A/C contractors from misrepresenting the need for a repair or making false statements to win a job (16 TAC §75.70). Electricians may not give consumers inaccurate or misleading information (16 TAC §73.60). A second quote is a reasonable way to check a big repair.
  • Towing is licensed too. Texas requires tow truck companies, tow trucks and tow truck operators to be licensed by TDLR, so the company, the truck and the driver should each turn up in TDLR's license search.
  • Pest control needs a state license too. The Texas Department of Agriculture requires anyone in the business of structural pest control to hold a business license, every licensed business must have a responsible certified applicator, and the business has to carry liability insurance to keep its license.
  • If something goes wrong, you can file a complaint with the plumbing board at (512) 936-5200, TDLR at (800) 803-9202, or TDA's Structural Pest Control Service at (866) 918-4481.
