Grand Prairie Guide

The Outdoors in Grand Prairie, Texas

Grand Prairie stretches across the middle of the Metroplex between Dallas and Fort Worth, and its outdoor centerpiece is Joe Pool Lake on the southern edge of town — a big reservoir with lakeside parks, camping, and marinas, plus a famous holiday light display each winter.

Here's where to get outside in and around Grand Prairie.

Joe Pool Lake

Joe Pool Lake, on Grand Prairie's south side, is the town's main outdoor draw — a popular reservoir for swimming, boating, and fishing. Loyd Park on its shore offers camping and hiking, and Lynn Creek Park is a year-round spot with boat ramps, a full-service marina, boat rentals, and a fishing pier.

Having a big lake with this much developed access is a real asset for a landlocked city, and the two parks cover everything from a day of fishing to a weekend of lakeside camping.

Prairie Lights

Each winter, Lynn Creek Park at Joe Pool Lake hosts Prairie Lights, one of the largest holiday light displays in the region — a drive-through experience of some 4 million lights. It's become a Metroplex holiday tradition, drawing families from across the area.

It turns the lakeside park into a seasonal destination, and it's one of the more distinctive outdoor-ish outings in Grand Prairie, even if it runs on wheels rather than on foot.

City Parks

Beyond the lake, Grand Prairie keeps a system of city parks and trails for everyday recreation, spread across a long, wide city that runs from Dallas nearly to Fort Worth.

Between Joe Pool Lake, the lakeside parks, and the parks in town, Grand Prairie covers the outdoor basics, with the lake as the clear highlight.
