The History of Mount Pleasant, Texas

Titus County was created by the Texas legislature on May 11, 1846, and Mount Pleasant was founded exactly two years later, on May 11, 1848, to serve as its county seat. The town took its place at the center of the new county's farm country in the rolling, wooded hills of Northeast Texas.

Early life wasn't easy. High waters along the creeks and the nearby Sulphur River frequently halted travel, isolating the young town during wet seasons. But as the county seat, Mount Pleasant became the natural center of trade, government, and community for the surrounding settlers, anchored by its courthouse square.

Like most successful East Texas towns, Mount Pleasant grew with the railroad, which connected its cotton, timber, and farm goods to wider markets and made it a regional trading hub. The historic Titus County Courthouse on the downtown square — rebuilt in 1895 after a devastating fire and later restored to its 1940 appearance — reflects the prosperity of that era. Mount Pleasant has preserved its historic core and is a nationally recognized Texas Main Street City.

The area developed a strong ranching and farm-equipment identity, embodied today by Priefert Manufacturing, a globally known maker of farm, ranch, and rodeo equipment headquartered here — part of why Mount Pleasant is sometimes called the Horse Trailer Capital of Texas. The town also holds a quirky retail distinction: it was the site of Walmart's first store in Texas.

The defining economic force in modern Mount Pleasant has been poultry. Large-scale chicken processing — today operated by Pilgrim's Pride, part of the global JBS company, and employing thousands — turned Mount Pleasant into a major center of the East Texas poultry industry. The plants provided steady work and powered the local economy for decades.

That industry also transformed the community. The demand for labor drew a large wave of Hispanic and immigrant workers, and over the late 20th and early 21st centuries Mount Pleasant became a majority-Hispanic city — more than half of residents now identify as Hispanic or Latino. The result is one of the most diverse and youngest small cities in East Texas, with a vibrant multicultural character reflected in its restaurants, churches, and businesses.

Today Mount Pleasant is a city of about 16,000 and the commercial center of a micropolitan area covering Titus County. Its economy is anchored by poultry processing (Pilgrim's Pride), manufacturing (Priefert), healthcare (Titus Regional Medical Center), education (Northeast Texas Community College), and retail. A loop bypass completed in 2015 improved traffic around the growing city.

Mount Pleasant markets itself with the Titus County motto — the Land of Lakes and Forests — and for good reason: it sits amid a cluster of excellent lakes that draw anglers and boaters from across the region. With its historic Main Street downtown, its poultry-driven economy, its diverse and youthful population, and its lakes, Mount Pleasant is a working East Texas city with a character all its own.
