Barbecue and Texas Classics

For barbecue, Butcher Boy's Smokehouse is the local go-to, known for slow-smoked brisket and ribs done in the East Texas tradition. It's the name most often mentioned when locals talk about where to get good smoked meat in town.

For a classic Texas sit-down meal, Clear Springs Restaurant is a regional favorite famous for its catfish and onion rings, and the Republic Steakhouse offers a more upscale experience with premium steaks and seafood — the kind of place students take visiting parents and couples go for a special night out. Together they cover the Texas comfort-food and special-occasion ends of the spectrum.

Tex-Mex, Italian, and Downtown

Tex-Mex is a staple here, as in every East Texas town. La Carreta Mexican Café serves authentic Mexican cooking with a Texas twist, and the Jalapeño Tree — a made-from-scratch Mexican and Southwestern restaurant with East Texas roots — has been a reliable favorite for years. For Italian, Napoli's and Roma's turn out pasta and pizza.

The historic downtown is the heart of the dining scene, with restaurants, cafes, and bars filling the red-brick blocks. Spots like Dolli's Diner serve classic diner fare in the middle of it all, and the walkable district makes it easy to combine a meal with shopping or an event.

The College-Town Coffee and Casual Scene

No discussion of eating in Nacogdoches is complete without Java Jacks Coffee House, the cozy, long-running downtown coffee shop that functions as the unofficial living room of the SFA community. It's the go-to spot for coffee, study sessions, and casual meetups.

Beyond the standouts, the student population supports a deep bench of casual and affordable options — burger joints, pizza, taco spots, and late-night eats — clustered near campus and along the main commercial corridors.
