Tenaha's most distinctive draw is its place in Texas lore: 'Tenaha, Timpson, Bobo, and Blair.' By tradition the chant was a railroad porter's call naming four Shelby County stops along the line — Tenaha and Timpson, which still exist, and Bobo and Blair, two tiny stops long since faded. The phrase later became a good-luck cry rolled out in dice games, spread by Texas soldiers, and was recorded as a song by cowboy singer Tex Ritter, who grew up nearby.

For visitors, Tenaha is the kind of place where the story is the attraction — a real little railroad town behind a phrase that traveled the world. Pairing the town with neighboring Timpson and a look at the old rail corridor makes for an offbeat slice of East Texas heritage you can't find anywhere else.
