Grand Saline Guide

Things to Do in Grand Saline, Texas

Grand Saline turns its salty heritage into one of the most unusual attractions in Texas — a building made entirely of salt — and pairs it with a beloved festival, a drive-through safari, and two of the region's best lakes nearby. For a small town, there's a lot of distinctive fun here.

Here's what to do in and around Grand Saline.

The Salt Palace

Grand Saline's signature attraction is the Salt Palace, the only building in North America made of pure rock salt. The original was built for the 1936 Texas Centennial, and the current downtown Salt Palace has welcomed visitors since 1993 as a museum of the town's remarkable salt history — visitors are even encouraged to lick the walls to taste the real thing.

Inside, displays cover the salt-mining story and the history of northern Van Zandt County, along with tributes to two famous Grand Saline natives: aviator Wiley Post and Christian music star Chris Tomlin. Admission is free (donations appreciated), making it an easy and memorable stop.

Festivals and the Safari

Grand Saline celebrates its heritage with two big annual events. The Salt Festival, held the last weekend of September, brings parades, contests, special lunches, vendors, and live music to honor the town's signature mineral. In spring, the Main Street festival on the second Saturday in April adds live music, food, kiddie activities, and vendors.

Just outside town, the Canton Grand Safari offers a drive-through wildlife adventure where you can see alligators, giraffes, monkeys, zebras, and snakes, plus a petting zoo of barnyard animals — a fun family outing that adds an exotic twist to a day in the area.

Lakes and the Outdoors

Grand Saline's location puts some of East Texas's best fishing within easy reach. Lake Fork, world-famous as one of the premier trophy largemouth bass lakes in the country, lies a short drive away, and Lake Tawakoni offers more boating and fishing nearby. The local salt flats and the surrounding farm country add their own scenery.

Between the one-of-a-kind Salt Palace, the festivals, the safari, and the great fishing lakes close by, Grand Saline offers a genuinely distinctive menu of things to do — quirky, fun, and rooted in a heritage unlike anywhere else in Texas.
