Where to Eat in Kaufman, Texas

The historic Kaufman square is the center of town and where a few of the more distinctive places to eat sit. My Love's Diner, near the square, is the local pick for classic American comfort food in a casual setting. The square also hosts the town's big events, so it's busiest on festival weekends.

A standout is the Especially For You Tea Room, set inside the Historic First National Bank Building from 1908 — an old-fashioned tea room known for its signature lemonade tea, and the kind of spot that gives the square its charm.

Like most Texas towns, Kaufman's steady dining is Tex-Mex. Jesse's Fajitas n Ritas, on West Mulberry Street, does fajitas and margaritas, and Jalisco's Mexican Grill covers the tacos-and-enchiladas end with a full menu of traditional plates.

For everyday meals, the usual chains and fast food line the highway corridors through town. But the local Tex-Mex spots are where residents actually eat.

Kaufman is close enough to Terrell, about fifteen minutes north, to fold in that town's larger dining lineup when you want more options — including Terrell's well-known Silver Saloon for barbecue and live music. And the full range of the Metroplex is under an hour up US-175 toward Dallas.

For a town Kaufman's size, though, the appeal is the local, unpretentious cooking close to home rather than a big scene.
